Gerard Lopez and GL27 Racing have launched a new motorsports workforce-development initiative that will place autistic young adults in active race support roles during off-road racing events, beginning with the 2026 Laughlin Desert Classic.

Lopez, an entrepreneur, investor and owner of GL27 Racing, launched the initiative based on his own experiences growing up with autism and a belief that neurodivergent young people should have greater access to meaningful roles within motorsports.

The new Monito Race Command Center program will invite four participants with autism, ages 16-21, to serve as working members of the race team at each event. Participants will assist with race tracking, strategy support, GPS monitoring, radio communications and data analysis while working alongside experienced team personnel.

According to the announcement, the program is intended to provide real-world experience in the technology, communications and decision-making that support modern motorsports operations. The Monito Foundation and its partners will cover participants' travel, lodging, meals, team apparel and training costs.

GL27 Racing said the initiative will expand in the future, with plans to develop an additional race command center designed to accommodate young people with physical disabilities. The team is also seeking support from industry members, including mechanics, electricians and carpenters interested in helping build the accessible facility.

Applications are open for autistic young adults ages 16-21 interested in participating in the program. Individuals interested in applying or supporting the initiative through funding, equipment, transportation, lodging or professional expertise can contact @gl27racingteam on Instagram.
